The dentil (or “tooth”) pattern was inspired by the cut ends of rafters, and Persian culture had a significant influence on its development. The oldest known example of this pattern is found in the decoration of the tomb of the Persian ruler Darius, dating to 500 B.C. Later, the Ancient Greeks adopted this pattern and used it to decorate the buttresses of Greek buildings.
