Columns and pilasters: classic luxury

Columns and pilasters, reminiscent of a glorious era, are filled with luxury and solidity. Such ornamentation obliges to maintain a classical style throughout the interior. Usually, column capitals come in three types, which to this day are named after the classical canons of the ancient Greeks and Romans:

– Doric – simple, without elaborate ornaments;
– Ionic – with curled volutes (“ears”) on the sides;
– Corinthian – the most ornate, decorated with leaves, flowers and other ornaments.

Pilasters are closely related to columns – these are decorative details used for wall decoration, giving the interior a refined aristocracy. The capitals of classical pilasters, like those of columns, are Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.

Banquet Hall Luxury

Columns and pilasters are rarely found in private premises, most often these accessories are used to decorate banquet halls, restaurants, cafes and other representative premises. Classic Line Decor columns and pilasters can be seen in the banquet hall “Sigmutės kiemelis”, a classical-style casino in Kaunas. However, if a private residence is of classical-style architecture, such details complement the interior, revealing the spirit of bygone eras. Columns and pilasters are used at the main entrance door in the house, they can be used to frame the entrance to the living room, as well as to decorate passing spaces – the corridor, the hall.

Not just decoration

Columns and pilasters came from the architectural style of ancient Greece and Rome, so when they are used in the interior, the room becomes a reflection of a grand history. In ancient architecture, columns performed not only a decorative function – their main purpose was to support the partition beam or ceiling. Therefore, even today, when using these classical style details in spaces, they must reach the ceiling, “support” it. “Classic Line Decor” columns do not perform the function of a supporting structure, but “hide” the beam of the supporting structure of a metal or reinforced concrete building. These details are bright representatives of the classical style, so when creating an interior with columns and pilasters, the lamps and furniture should also be classic. Also, these details require a large space, quite high ceilings, where there would be room to reveal the beauty of the columns and pilasters.
