Cornices mouldings (244 x 8.4 x 7.5 cm)

Kymatias. A strip ornament of stylized bull’s eyes or eggs (called eggs&darts) with intervening arrow motifs. Kymatias was then and is now used to decorate crowning cornices and column capitals. Having appeared in ancient Greek architecture, Kymatias spread very successfully in ancient Rome, and modifications reached the decoration of Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism and Neoclassicism buildings. This ornament is perhaps the most popular in ceiling strips.
